Microsoft's managed deployment of OpenAI models (GPT-4o, o3, DALL-E, Whisper) within Azure with enterprise SLAs and compliance.
Overview
Azure OpenAI Service hosts OpenAI models within Azure data centers under the customer's Azure subscription. Advantages: VNET private endpoints, SOC2/HIPAA compliance, no training on customer data, regional data residency, Azure Active Directory auth, and enterprise SLAs. Uses OpenAI-compatible REST API with Azure-specific auth headers.

Commonly confused with
The same models as OpenAI's own API, reached through a different contract, endpoint shape and deployment model — you deploy a named model into a resource rather than calling a global endpoint. Choose it for enterprise agreements, regional data residency and compliance, not for capability. Version availability trails the direct API, so a model released upstream is not immediately callable here.
